The Department of Radiation Oncology is seeking a Research Associate to support the laboratory of Dr.
Michelle Howard by working with the Principal Investigator and other scientific trainees (undergraduates, post-baccalaureate fellows, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows) on preclinical studies involving redox modulating drugs in the treatment of diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG).
The research associate will also be responsible for overseeing and managing lab safety and working with environmental health and safety.
Excellent oral and written communication and computer skills are necessary.
Duties to include: Research · Coordinate and manage multiple research projects.
· Adapt and perform protocols from the literature.
· Coordinate communication among Principal Investigator and other lab members.
· Collect, process and store animal specimens.
Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations · Manage research projects, support, and conduct complex research.
· Arrange and plan daily and weekly activities to prepare for research protocols.
· Perform varied tasks in the research environment.
Adhere to safety and compliance guidelines.
· Collect, record, and consolidate data as directed by the Principal Investigator.
· Track progress of research activities.
Adhere to Quality Assurance protocols to maintain validity and integrity of research data.
· Develop and implement procedures for monitoring data integrity Data Collection, Analysis, Reporting, and Presenting · Maintain a written and electronic record as per instructed by the Principal Investigator of all experiments and investigations.
· Analyze data using GraphPad Prism for relevance and data integrity.
· Contributes to lab/research project as evidenced by documented recognition in publications as an author or for technical assistance.
Administrative and Project Management · Manage/direct a research lab, center, service, or core facility.
Ensure staff compliance with UI policies and procedures.
Develop and implement policies and procedures that support staff engagement in the workplace.
Assure safety and compliance; respond to compliance and safety violations.
· Initiate lab outreach via website creation, design, and regular updating.
· Oversee many of the administrative functions, including but not limited to writing and amending protocols, making decisions regarding the acquisition of equipment, software, and supplies, and managing staff.
· Responsible for following guidelines and maintaining required documentation in support of safety programs.
· Track various indicators of project progress and summarize in reports to the research team.
· Work with environmental health and safety to maintain compliance and a safe lab environment; document compliance with safety and regulatory guidelines.
Supervision/Staffing · Develop training procedures for basic and high-level lab techniques and protocols.
· Provide ongoing training on basic and new lab techniques and protocols for employees.
· Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to track progress and assure outcomes are achieved.
Required Qualifications: · A master’s degree or higher in Radiation Biology, Cancer Biology, or an associated field, or equivalent combination of education and experience (e.
g.
Bachelor’s degree with laboratory experience).
· Minimum of 3 years of relevant research experience in radiation biology or related field.
· Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
· Sound independent judgment and competence in research methodologies required.
· Strong organizational skills.
· Ability to prioritize tasks and meet established project timelines.
· Ability to interact effectively with individuals from various backgrounds and fields of expertise.
· Ability to demonstrate professionalism.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
· Knowledge of and the ability to locate, interpret and evaluate research findings compiled and documented by others and use this material to support empirical research.
· Knowledge of practices, behaviors, applicable laws, rules, and regulations governing proper research conduct; ability to demonstrate ethical and compliant behavior in diverse situations.
· Proficiency in cell culture techniques – isolating and culturing normal and cancer cells is required.
Desirable Qualifications: · Experience with in vitro techniques such as flow cytometry, clonogenic cell survival assays, western blot is desired.
· Animal handling experience desired.
· Careful attention to detail.
· Knowledge of UI policies and procedures and familiarity with UI entities.
