Postpartum/Gynecology (3 JPP):
3 John Pappajohn Pavilion (3 JPP) is a 24-bed inpatient unit dedicated for women's services.
Gynecological services include: Post-surgery care of total abdominal hysterectomies, robotic hysterectomies, myomectomies, fallopian tube reanastomosis, exploratory laparotomy of pelvic masses, and repair of uterine and vaginal wall prolapses.
Postpartum/newborn services include: couplet care, electronic infant security, lactation specialists, and support from Mother's Milk Bank of Iowa.
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing is seeking a Patient Care Technician to assist members of the nursing team in provision of multiple types of patient care in in-patient and out-patient care areas.
Their work requires familiarity with a wide variety of nursing procedures used in delivering patient care.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
Carry out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including but not limited to phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, & Foley catheter removal and cares for patients who are medically isolated.
Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, applying binders, braces, etc.
Perform special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge including but not limited to phlebotomy, ECG lead/12 lead placement, and brace/pin site cares.
Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
Directly provide for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
Turn, positions and ambulates patients.
Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishments, and record patients' intake.
Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output.
Participate in nursing care conferences; report pertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge.
Provide for patient comfort measures through social interactions.
Share responsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of unit.
May assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurse.
Clean areas per designated guidelines and standards demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and care of the housekeeping equipment
Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively with others verbally, electronically, and in writing with patients, family members and health care staff.
Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
Ability to provide care with regard to patient condition and age.
Knowledge of principles of sanitation and health hazards.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
Knowledge of medical terminology, instruments and supplies.
Ability to collect patient data and maintain accurate records.
Knowledge of keyboarding and computer data entry skills.
Percent of Time: 50-100%
Schedule: Shifts negotiable, every 3rd weekend, rotating holiday
Location: John Pappajohn Pavilion
Rotations: Every third weekend, Rotating holidays
