The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences is seeking a 50% Pediatric Genetic Eye Clinic Coordinator (PVD1; 3A).
The Pediatric Genetic Eye Clinic Coordinator is responsible for coordinating care for and interacting with pediatric inherited eye disease patients and their families seen by the faculty members of the Pediatric Genetic Eye Disease (PGED) service of the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences.
This individual works alongside the genetic counselor and other department personnel to support the operations of the PGED service.
Primary duties include assisting in collating and interpretating genetic variants reports, database entry, and report writing.
Additional responsibilities may include assisting in research projects on genetic vision loss by facilitating the participation of a subset of inherited eye disease patients in clinical research studies, supporting the genetic counselor in pre-visit, post-visit, and follow up appointment for patients seen in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, and providing health education to patients, family members, ophthalmology residents, fellows and students.
Position responsibilities include: Provide Support Services to Clinical and Non-clinical Departments Collaborate with nursing, medical staff, and other health professionals in planning, delivering and evaluating care for pediatric genetic eye patient populations, including the acquisition and review of prior medical records, medical images and other data pertinent to the patients’ visit Assist genetic counselor with tasks for clinical genetic counseling visits including preparing pre-genetic counseling appointment information, assisting in necessary preparation of documentation for genetic testing, and preparing familial letters based on genetic diagnosis.
Collaborate with the faculty of the PGEDS to develop, implement and maintain uniform procedures for management of inherited eye disease patients including the appropriate referrals for low vision rehabilitation and other services Perform data entry and maintain internal databases of patient medical information, procedures and testing results.
Prepare genetic testing result reports for review by PGED faculty and staff.
Comply with department and institutional regulations in efforts to achieve missions including proficiency and competency testing as appropriate.
May collaborate with department clinical trials team members to recruit, enroll, and obtain consent for available research studies in accordance with IRB protocols and procedures.
Organize research inquiries and requests from UIHC and non-UIHC providers and patients.
May organize and analyze data for use in research grants and publications.
Participate in patient management to facilitate treatment plans.
Provide specialized health education to the inherited eye disease patient population and health professional students and residents assisting in the care of this patient population.
Coordinate care among multidisciplinary health professionals and ophthalmology support services.
May perform other duties as assigned.
Communicate/Collaborate with Internal and External Constituents Coordinate and support clinical and educational experiences for ophthalmology residents and fellows.
Collaborate with peers and co-workers to enhance the delivery of health care.
Collaborate and communicate with internal and external constituents including healthcare providers and ordering institutions under the direction of PGED staff.
Provide feedback to management on means to achieve goals and resolve service issues.
Develop Programs, Policies, and Practices that Enhance Patient/Staff Environment Ensure patient visits occurring within the PGEDS meet or exceed all established documentation requirements.
May provide input/suggestions regarding policies, practices, and programs that improve services.
Human Resources May provide coaching and counseling to department personnel to assure that desired outcomes are achieved.

50 - $31,023/yr Pay Level: 3A REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS A Bachelor’s degree in health, biological sciences, or human services, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
1-3 years experience in an acute care, ambulatory clinic, or healthcare setting with patient interaction.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication (both verbal and written) skills Demonstrated ability to work as a cooperative team member Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service Proficiency in computer software applications, including Microsoft Office Suite Ability to analyze information and situations, prioritize tasks, develop solutions to challenges Ability to use good judgment while working independently and in a team setting DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience as an orthoptist in a healthcare setting with patient care interaction.
Experience as an RN in an acute care, ambulatory clinic, or healthcare setting with patient interaction.
Experience working in a clinical eye care setting Knowledge of medical terminology Knowledge of human genetics and genetics terminology Knowledge of University policies and procedures and regulations.
Experience with genetic eye diseases and genetic patients.
Demonstrated attention to detail Excellent organizational skills Experience working with data and databases Experience with the research process, specifically human clinical research.
Demonstrated ability to resolve issues related to customer concerns or workflow changes and challenges.
